  3. Rear wheel – how do I fit the gears? Will a rear wheel motor work with my bike?

Our 350W and 500W high power kits come with a rear wheel. This is because with the increased power it’s necessary to have rear wheel drive to avoid wheel slippage

The short answer

To use the rear Swytch motor 500W, just take the gear cluster off your existing rear wheel and swap it over onto the Swytch motor wheel. It is compatible with up to 12 speed gear clusters

If you can’t remove it from your old one, just buy a new gear cluster, they cost about $15 on eBay

The long answer

There are two main types of bicycle gears:

  1. Hub gears: If your bike has hub gears the Swytch rear wheel kit will NOT work – you should choose a front wheel 250W kit

  1. Derailleur gears: If your bike has derailleur gears then you can easily fit a rear wheel Swytch kit

This is what “derailleur” gears look like

Just one last thing to consider – there are two types of derailleur gear c luster. The difference is just to do with how they fit

  2. Cassette gear clusters

This article gives a good explanation of the difference:

The 500W Swytch rear motor comes with a cassette fitting meaning it can fit cassette gear clusters (up to 12 speeds)
